Hi Art Lover,

Sacred Nude: Solo and Workshop Event opens this Saturday! I’m brimming with excitement and nerves as I finalise last minute details for my first little solo show…. I almost can’t believe it’s finally happening as I’ve been dreaming it up for over a year now. What a crazy and wonderful time it has been, with many challenges and mental blocks that I have had to overcome to move through.

The catalogues of Sacred Nude art and poetry by the lovely Francesca Simonelli are on their way to me and I can’t wait to see the physical manifestation of all the digital work we did on it. Thank you to those special people who helped with that!!

There is still time to get a special edition (5 left) these will be signed and come with vinyl stickers of some of the Sacred Nudes and Flower of Life mandalas. And a big kiss from me for your support 😉 Get yours!

Catalogues can be picked at the opening or posted to your address one week later by the 29 September- I will be posting internationally too.

Mindless Mindful, Scared Nude poetry by Francesca Simonelli

Mindless Mindful selfie.jpgMindless Mindful selfie.jpg

In the days leading up to my first solo show: Sacred Nude, I have asked poet and writer Francesca Simonelli to respond to my Sacred Nude drawings. What she did completely blew my mind away! Every day until the show opens I will post some of her very special, moving and inspiring poetry for you to enjoy.

Francesca Simonelli‘s poems have touched me and many others for many years and I was over the moon when Francesca agreed to write some words in response to the Sacred Nude series of artworks. Sacred Nude was inspired by a meditation practice that resulted in the healing of body and mind. I wanted to create a series that was dedicated to my meditation practice and the joy (and struggles) I encountered therein.

Exhibition opening: 22 September 2018, 6-9pm

Opening times: 1-5pm every Saturday until 20 October 2018

Inspiring and creative workshops each Saturday

Mindless-Mindful

By Francesca Simonelli

My heart

Slowed

To the point of emergency

Sounding the alarms

Of medical officials

I sat calmly

Questioning

“Do I want to stay…..

or do I want to go?”

I silently contemplated

Continuing the mindless monotony.

Exposed there

In the ER

Doctors swarming

Whispering

It may as well have been a dream

It was all so surreal

I sat

Neutralized

Seemingly unaffected

This wasn’t the first time.

With the near stroke

And inexplicable paralysis,

I panicked.

When in the midst of writing –

My hand simply stopped working

And I went numb.

Mindful

Only because my body forced me into submission –

That terrified me.

But this,

Now

I knew I could control my heart,

On some level.

I was in charge.

I could drop this body

And run,

Or let myself be lifted.

I walked out –

Mindless

Mindful

Perhaps a bit of both…

While the doctors were huddled

Not telling me their plan

Down the hallway,

As if I were already flat-lined.

They did not include me

In their conversation

As though I were an eavesdropper from the other team

Listening in on their mysterious tactics

While the head coach

Mumbled indiscernibly.

I did not trust their approach

Or methodology

But it was a Sunday

And my holistic doctor was not the “on-call” sort

Unless it truly were an emergency

I just was not convinced.

I would wait….

I was ok if I died waiting

But I knew in that moment

It was completely up to me.

With blind faith

I walked away

My legs still as sexy as ever

I could have been a dancer

I sauntered off that artificially lit stage

Where I would have been hooked up

And God only knows what…

Tested

Inserted

Grabbed

Handled

Poked

Prodded.

You know the routine….

The, “Lie down and take it” investigation

A ridiculous process of elimination.

Now

I rest my body when she calls intermission

My legs like antennae

One pointing to the heavens

Reminding me that I am made of stars

The other pointing to the earth

Reminding me that I am made of dirt

I may hide my arms behind my back

I may not let many people in

But believe me when I say

I am wide open

And I know who I am.

Mindful

Many fleeting moments

Still

Mindless

Most days.

Francesca’s poetry is the most perfect companion to these Sacred Nude artworks. She speaks of presence, feminine power, sexuality and love.

SACRED NUDE

Split me

Divide me

Open me

Unify me

Patterns become me

Creator can hide me

In plain sight…

Merge and collide me

Divinity underlies me –

You cannot deny me

Or declassify me.

Just try to demystify me

See that you will quickly

Glorify me

Ignite me.

Recognize me

Deify me

Vilify me

Lullaby me

Magnify me

Liquefy me

Multiply me

I am dark queen

I am the darkness of light

Lilith of the night

You have no chance in this fight…

I refuse to submit

Or blindly gratify.

I am amplified and fortified

I am chaos organized.

I am fertility

And creation

Birth and annihilation

I am open devastation

Cellular division

Peer inside me.

Ride me

Abide in me

Enter me

Emerge from me

Stand beside me

Or above me

And below me

Rise within me

I am mystery

And whimsy

Precision and pandemonium…

I am algorithmic and geometric

Poetic and fractal

Numerical and symbolic

I am woman

I am Pi

I am sanctified

And sublime.

I am written in tongues

And chemical symbols

Scientific and ceremonial

Rubric and ritualistic

I am digits and frequencies

Invisible yet very present

Visual and yet unseen.

Formulas and defiance

I am the ultimate contradiction

Living paradox

I am not quickly solved

Yet I am as complexly simple as can be

The most difficult of riddles

Come reflect with Sphinx

And Me….

I am spoken to life

By my very own voice

Birthed by Goddess

Guided by Providence

Matrix created

And infinitely multiplying

Sacred Nude: A Solo Exhibition and Workshop Event by Jessica K Ballantyne

First Solo Exhibition by Jessica K Ballantyne,

Curated by Maimuna Adam

In her “Sacred Nude” (2018) series, Jessica K Ballantyne presents morphed female bodies, at once multiple and singular, in a dialogue with the Flower of Life, an ancient and supposedly sacred, geometric symbol. For Ballantyne, the Flower of Life becomes an emblem of an ethereal self, an energy found outside the physical body.

Noting the symbol’s appearance throughout sacred sites and temples throughout the world and in the research by, amongst others, Leonardo Da Vinci, it is used to bring a sense of stability and peace through symmetry. Ballantyne feels that creating and having Sacred Geometry within eyesight can serve as a conscious and subconscious reminder of its creative, healing energy. The bodies in the Sacred Nude series are either turning towards the Flower of Life or away from it, but the symbol remains a source of light.

The artist’s fascination with the Flower of Life stems from her contact, not only with the metaphysical qualities of Sacred Geometry, but also through her research into meditation and neuroscience. The Flower of Life thus became a symbol of divine wisdom and healing change that can be achieved through self-reflection or meditation.

The Sacred Nudes are bodies that are naked, surrounded or framed by lush drapery inspired by classical nudes within the Western cannon of female beauty. Using bodies familiar to her, Ballantyne subtly questions her own ego and attachment to the body. As a South African woman, of Rhodesian, English and Scottish descent, growing up in Apartheid and post-Apartheid South Africa, her nudes inevitably tell us more than the artist would initially lead us to believe. These are bodies are simultaneously presented to us as light while not negating the darker places of the soul; the ego mind and the fears associated with inhabiting a temporary, material body in a politically and socially unstable country. The Sacred Nudes subtly confront the Western cannon of beauty by distorting and disfiguring the bodies whilst simultaneously placing them within a ‘safe’ space where the light of wisdom or truth in the form of the Flower of Life can envelope them.

“As humans we have been bombarded with imagery of women. Unfortunately many of these images teach us to constantly view ourselves from the outside, as bodies and objects without subjectivity and presence. I rebel against this limiting portrayal of women and invite the viewer into a private, psychological space where I manipulate the physical body to speak about presence, transcending the ego and letting go of attachments to the body and mind.” – Jessica K. Ballantyne

The Exhibition

Sacred Nude is a free, solo exhibition of eleven mixed-media drawings by Jessica K Ballantyne, combining the nude with a surreal twist, a distortion and doubling of bodies alongside Sacred Geometry.

The exhibition celebrates the psychological, spiritual and the divine feminine and was a tribute to a meditation experience the artist had during a progressive workshop with neuroscientist and author Dr Joe Dispenza.

My newest commission.
Title: Eden’s Garden
Medium: Mixed media on paper
Size: 59.4 x 84.1cm

Eden’s Garden is the commission I completed recently. I don’t share all my commissions but this one was such a joy to create and my client and I were so pleased at how it turned out, I thought I would share it with you.

My commission process is simple. It starts with a brief conversation about what kind of artwork you want, in what theme etc. After we have sorted out the size, figures and themes I draft up a few ideas in the form of digital collages which I then send to the client to discuss. After discussing what we like and don’t like, we work together to choose the most thrilling composition which I then create the final artwork from, using graphite, spray paint and wax pencil on paper (in this case).

I fell in love with this drawing as I was making it. My client wanted Eve in the garden of Eden but I thought she would be lonely so I brought in Lilith to keep her company;) I decided to include Lilith and Eve in a sensual display of youth, eroticism and femininity. The flower of Life unites the figures through the snaking  pythons, one of which (on Eve’s shoulder) is an albino.

Close up of Eve. My client didn’t want the ladies to look identical so I thought it fitting to give Lilith (the Femme Fatale) darker hair and the innocent Eve, blond hair. Slightly stereotypical, I know, but I was playing on the traditional signs of a Femme Fatale vs an innocent, virginal being. What my client did specify, and these are in his words not mine (look away all you gentle souls) “Eve must have a hairy c*** or I’m not interested”

I had no problem with that. So with these things in mind I created Eden’s Garden and my client is thrilled with it so so am I. Hope you like it!

Yale Radio Interview with Brainard Carey

IMG_2689-e1390500063117.jpgIMG_2689-e1390500063117.jpg

I’m pretty excited about my first radio interview with Brainard Carey from Yale radio. In it, I speak about the Sacred Nude mixed media fine art series as well as the inspiration behind the work, my Kundalini experience and my new series : Kaleidoscopes.

Sacred Nude was inspired by a mediation weekend workshop with Dr Joe Dispenza. The weekend was magical, with talks about neuroscience and how meditation affects the brain and body in the most unbelievable ways. That I left feeling rather excited is an understatement. I realised the potential for meditation to change your life. The sacred nude series is a celebration of the joys and struggles associated with calming the mind through meditation. Sacred Nude speaks about the bliss state as well as the apparent hold the ego has on the mind and sometimes the body too. The Flower of Life is an ancient symbol which in these mixed media artworks, reflect the pure wisdom and love that is found within us all.

Please enjoy the radio interview with Brainard Carey, founder of Praxis and a lead figure in helping to share the world of artists with the public as well as being a creative force himself and helping many artists achieve stability in an ever-changing art market.
