Embracing Change Through the Sunsets of Figueira da Foz, Portugal

“In the Sun, I feel as one.”

Kurt Cobain

I’ve been in Portugal for a month now. Its been difficult emotionally and physically, I’m not going to lie. But when I wake up in this beautiful town, see the stunning sea and walk along the beach, I feel comforted and soooo peaceful and can feel myself healing in many ways.

I have two really sweet neighbors and I’ve been warmly welcomed. These gestures of kindness have meant so much to me 🙂

I’ve been moved to create a small series of paintings made on synthetic paper and water soluble pencils. They explore the magical landscapes and beauty of the sun and the sea. All of these were painted from life or from photos I’ve been taking on my daily walks.

Burning the Phoenix; Revisiting my older works

Burning the Phoenix; Revisiting my older works

A Fashionably late Happy New Year!

Jessica Ballantyne I Strap.jpgJessica Ballantyne I Strap.jpg

The start to the new year was laced with so many deadlines and responsibilities, none of which related to my art practice, so unfortunately, I don’t have any new work to show. I thought I would show some old work that have almost become icons of my message, which has stayed relatively unchanged but has grown since my final year at University in 2008. I made ten paintings that year, I will show you four, two of which I own and two of which are in very happy homes:)

When I look back on these works I see how anger, confusion and depression were transmuted into something positive and the effort was made to try and make sense of it all, through imagery. I wasn’t afraid to offend- in fact, I wanted to. I became a passionate (and very angry) feminist through contact with various writings and art from a range of writers and artists exploring femininity in art. I just had to express my thoughts and emotions into something concrete- I chose painting.

Jessica-Ballantyne-Puppet-Chick.jpgJessica-Ballantyne-Puppet-Chick.jpg

I was very much influenced by one of our lecturers who had given us presentations on the ‘self’ in art, with artists like Anna Mendieta and Cindy Sherman being used as examples. It was only then that I realised that this is what I was doing through my work. I was trying to find the ‘self’ in my self, in my art or through my art. I was trying to give the figures in my paintings a fixed presence that I felt was lacking in my own being.

At the same time as wanting to give the figures in my paintings a presence I wanted to show how this presence gets undermined by the act of self-objectification, or turning yourself, your body into an object.

This is a rather strange phenomenon which can happen to both men and women (although its more common in women) in which you often see yourself from a third person perspective, like you are watching a movie of yourself. You may loose a sense of ‘hereness’ and ‘nowness’ and feel disconnected somehow from your body.

Jessica-Ballantyne-All-legs-and-Ass.jpgJessica-Ballantyne-All-legs-and-Ass.jpg

Along with these desires to show a presence in the female body I also wanted to confront the idea of the ‘gaze’, specifically the ‘male gaze’. I felt at the time that this so called ‘male gaze’ was responsible for this self objectification and lack of presence in paintings/photographs of nude women created by artists.

I wanted to create a new nude, one that was strong; physically, spiritually and psychologically. One that could not be turned into an object of desire, even if she was naked. One that turned away from the viewer, stared out at the viewer or repelled the viewer with strangeness of form or colour or both.

Jessica-Ballantyne-Seated-Nude.jpgJessica-Ballantyne-Seated-Nude.jpg

It’s no secret that I use my own body as the subject of many of my paintings, which could, in a way, be considered as a form of self objectification, which is ironic on a few levels:) Because of this, I want there to be a humorous, if not cynical exploration of what it means to be a woman or indeed a human being in this world, in this body and in these times.

I think many people are feeling a displacement of being, dare I say a looming sense of doom?? Okay lets not get pessimistic. I believe there are some wonderful developments in our world too. Someone remind me what they are please?

I think people, like me, are searching for something, they do not know what it is. I hope that it is a sense of self they are seeking and a sense of peace, which I think all human beings search for without necessarily knowing it.

Did you know that 2015 saw only 11 women make it to the Artfact’s top 100 living artists list? A huge improvement to the 5 that made it to Artnet’s 2011-2014 list yet, still shockingly low! The title is a play on women’s fashion magazines, a nod to the title of the first major, landmark, all female exhibition put on by the Pompidou in 2009 (called “Elles”).

This exhibition will be a small ruffle to the art world status quo!”

Eye Balling; A surreal and figurative oil painting exploring the nature of gaze

Eye Balling; A surreal and figurative oil painting exploring the nature of gaze.

The inspiration and making of the painting by Jessica Ballantyne

Jessica Ballantyne, JB artist, surreal, figurative, pink, fleshy, painted bodies, female body, oil paint, eyes, gaze, eyeball, goggling, eye-balling, nude, erotic, sensual, translucent, lace, lacey, lovelace, layers, spraypaint, floral, flowers, breasts, buttocks, squished, bodies, disfiguration, staring, objectification, self-objectification, feminine, feminist, sexuality, sex object, sexual, Hans Bellmer, subjectivity,

Eye-Balling is a piece that explores the gaze and how we look at ourselves and others. I indulged myself with textures more than usual in this painting, and the combination of spray and oil paint with the lace layers gives the artwork an almost translucent feel.

This painting comments on the nature of self objectification. Self-objectification is the process by which women are conditioned to view their bodies as objects to be looked at. In my opinion, this self-objectification causes a void between experience and the perception of experience by creating a sense of self observation, where it’s difficult to focus on the reality and feelings of an experience because one is concerned with ones outer appearance whilst having the experience. So it is possible to be having an experience and at the same time viewing yourself (as if from outside) having the experience; an observers perspective to ones own body. I was very much inspired by Hans Bellmer’s Dolls for this painting.

Each canvas holds a different piece of the body or abstraction of the body. There is distortion and repetition of body parts and an overwhelmingly ‘pink’ and fleshy feeling of the over feminised body parts, shapes and forms contrast with eyes that are solid, easily recognisable and that stare out at the viewer.

The body is distorted, disfigured and parts are merging with other parts, in other words there is no real autonomy or individuality that can be easily identified. The eyes themselves seem to be either looking through the mass of bodies or form part of the fleshy folds themselves, becoming the subject of the looking as well as the object being looked at.

See the ‘making of ‘photos below and view the finished piece at the bottom of this post:)

I am very happy to announce that Eye-Balling is finished!

This is a piece that explores the gaze and how we look at ourselves and others. This oil painting comments on the nature of self objectification. Self-objectification is the process by which women are conditioned to view their bodies as objects to be looked at.

Each canvas holds a different piece of the body or abstraction of the body. There is distortion and repetition of body parts and an overwhelmingly ‘pink’ and fleshy feeling that contrasts with eyes that are solid, easily recognisable and that stare out at the viewer.

I indulged myself with textures more than usual in this piece, and the combination of spray and oil paint with the lace layers gives it an almost translucent feel.

I will be offering limited edition prints of each section of the piece, made to order for around £45. They will be 40x40cm (as original canvas size) on museum grade paper (Hahnemuhule German Etching paper) and archival ink; the good stuff. They will be limited to 20 of each and will be signed and numbered in pencil.

Interested in a print? Contact me via the Contact page and I’ll send along the details:)

Jessica Ballantyne’s Venus Confined; A Short Clip

Screen-Shot-2014-08-31-at-09.46.13.pngScreen-Shot-2014-08-31-at-09.46.13.png

Jessica Ballantyne’s Venus Confined

A Short Clip of the Making of.

Inspired by the Venus of Willendorf statue, these charcoal pieces explore the female body as a fertility object and give an active element to the rather passive and small statue on which the figures are based.

With these works, I hope to show a body that is dynamic, expressive and threatening to burst from its confines (in this case the egg-like structure that is a symbol of fertility).

Hope you enjoy, please leave a comment below if you like!

Jessica Ballantyne’s Surfboard Art- Surreal, Figurative and erotic oil painting on a 1.7m board

New work; using a surfboard as a canvas

Surfs up! Well maybe not with this special board…

When someone you know has a couple of surfboards lying around, not being used (except for that time when a group of friends took one out to a snowy hilltop, removed the fins and used it as a four person sledge) you do what any ‘sane’ artist would, ask if you can have the surfboards and then use them as a canvas.

Inspiration behind the piece

I had the idea of creating a human totem pole.

The idea was to create a body (almost like a tree) that was growing, morphing and pulsating into different parts, a body that was uninhibited and uncontrollable. It’s a ‘dream body’ with a sleeping figure at the bottom who acts as the subject; holding the weight of the fleshy mass above. I wanted to express a kind of sexual awakening or growth. I use the female body to create an image of feminine sexuality and presence. I love using distortion and optical illusions for people to see more in a piece the more they look at it. This is a kind of visual game I like to play with spectators.

How I made it

The initial sketch

The idea started as a sketch (as many of my paintings do) which I then transformed into a massive 2.4m pencil drawing on wallpaper. The pencil drawing formed the basis of the idea I had for the surfboard although with the surfboard art, I wanted the painting to be bright, vibrant and like ‘eye candy’.

The Surfboard

After sanding and then priming the surfboard with three coats of acrylic gesso, I started off with the main composition in layers of artists acrylic paint. To get the form right and decide on composition, I often first do a couple of layers in acrylic paint before moving to oil paint. It dries faster and lets me get the basics down before applying the thin layers of oil paint .

I did change my mind a few times (as usual) and had to paint over and repaint many of the areas in the background but I am really pleased with the winding, green vines I ended up with and the phallic like protrusions that sneaked into the composition:)

I enjoyed distorting the painted body and mismatching parts, hinting at others whilst completely blurring the lines of where one part starts and the other begins.

The whole fabulously surreal piece culminates, right at the top of the board, in fertile, voluptuous ‘breast fruits’ (I just made that up) and ‘angels trumpet’ flowers, an extremely poisonous flower known for it’s beauty and hallucinogenic properties.

I wanted all the warmth of colour and light to come from this point and move down the colour spectrum as well as the surfboard to the purple face at the base of the surfboard.

Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair 2014

Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair 2014

The 11th annual Art Car Boot Fair in Brick Lane that happened a couple of weeks ago was fabulous!

About

“The Art Car Boot Fair is an original idea by Karen Ashton and has been developed by Karen and her sister Helen Hayward since our first event in 2004 in London. It was an idea that grew out of a desire to pick up where Joshua Compston’s ‘Fete Worse than Death’ and Gavin Turk’s ‘Livestock Market’ and Articultural Shows’ blazed a trail in the 90’s and to re-introduce some summer fun and frivolity into a thriving but increasingly commercial London art scene. We aim for the Art Car Boot Fair to be a day when the artists let their hair down and for all-comers to engage with art in a totally informal way, and to pick up some real art bargains to boot! Participation in the Art Car Boot Fair is by invitation and referral by original ‘booters’ only”

It was my first time there as part of the Cultivate Evolved team and it was awesome! Check out the short video below:

It was super sunny and the vibe was one of arty excitement that one can only get in a car park full of colourful artists on a sunny day in London :).

My final open studios at Second Floor is officially over and what a weekend! It was so hot and sunny that all the artists were super grateful to all those who came to visit us in our studios rather than spend the day in the park! My chocolate treats were melted and my wine was warm but all in all it was as fun as a barrel of monkeys:)  Met some interesting and friendly artists and some great new peeps who always seem ready to engage and learn about what we do! I also sold a couple of small things, mostly my colourful inkblots which look great framed!
