I am very happy to announce that Eye-Balling is finished!

This is a piece that explores the gaze and how we look at ourselves and others. This oil painting comments on the nature of self objectification. Self-objectification is the process by which women are conditioned to view their bodies as objects to be looked at.

Each canvas holds a different piece of the body or abstraction of the body. There is distortion and repetition of body parts and an overwhelmingly ‘pink’ and fleshy feeling that contrasts with eyes that are solid, easily recognisable and that stare out at the viewer.

I indulged myself with textures more than usual in this piece, and the combination of spray and oil paint with the lace layers gives it an almost translucent feel.

I will be offering limited edition prints of each section of the piece, made to order for around £45. They will be 40x40cm (as original canvas size) on museum grade paper (Hahnemuhule German Etching paper) and archival ink; the good stuff. They will be limited to 20 of each and will be signed and numbered in pencil.

Interested in a print? Contact me via the Contact page and I’ll send along the details:)

I have been in my new artist studio for two months now, after moving from Second Floor in Woolwich, and I am very chuffed! With the location of the studios being right next to the Royal Opera House production park (where they build sets etc) you are guaranteed a creative hub like no other. Beautiful and peaceful surroundings make this space a lovely place to be and to work.

MY INVOLVEMENT

I am exhibiting in the Art show with a great team at Art Style Gallery. Very grateful to be working with such friendly, passionate gallerists. I exhibited some of my surreal, erotic oil paintings with Art Style Gallery in Kent for their erotica show in 2013. So I am happy to be involved and contributing art to the erotic/ body themed section of the festival!

NEW WORK ON DISPLAY

I created four new erotic, nude oil paintings, specifically for the event. They are finely detailed with thin layers of oil paint and spray paint. I wanted the paintings to be passionate and sexy, sensual, and with a focus on femininity and pleasure. To give the impression of femininity and sexuality, the circular paintings are layered with lace patterning over the body.

It was so hot and sunny I was sweating art

My final open studios at Second Floor is officially over and what a weekend! It was so hot and sunny that all the artists were super grateful to all those who came to visit us in our studios rather than spend the day in the park! My chocolate treats were melted and my wine was warm but all in all it was as fun as a barrel of monkeys:)  Met some interesting and friendly artists and some great new peeps who always seem ready to engage and learn about what we do! I also sold a couple of small things, mostly my colourful inkblots which look great framed!

First Thursday at Cultivate Evolved- A Day and Evening of Superb Art and Upcoming Artists

First Thursday at Cultivate Evolved

A Day and Evening of Superb Art and Upcoming Artists

Every first Thursday of the month many galleries in London stay open until 9pm. This is a great way for people who usually work till 6pm to still be able to attend openings and galleries that would usually be closed at this time.

“Our walls are now permanently divided in to ten spaces, eight of which are used by the eight artists of Cultivate Evolved, the ninth and tenth spaces feature the latest in what we hope will be an ever revolving evolving parade of exciting guest artists. We hope the guest spaces will reflect the diversity of the eight residence artists of Cultivate Evolved and we look forward to you coming to explore the space, meet the group of Evolved artists and out special guests.”

Every two weeks we have two different guest artists gracing our walls at Cultivate Evolved. This First Thursday will feature artists: Quiet British Accent and Ben Naz as our guests.

Our eight permanent artists change their works every two weeks or so, so the walls are ever changing to keep things interesting and show off the artists latest ( and sometimes older) talents. Such an eclectic mix of artists should not be missed!

We are doing something great Plus the Vyner Street is filled with other high profile galleries; Degree Art, Hada Contemporary, The Wilkinson Gallery but to name a few. Some great contemporary art to be seen at these galleries, from established artists to recent graduates and solely Korean artists. Vyner street is the place to be for some vibrancy in the art world 🙂

When?

This Thursday 6 Feb 2014!

We are open from 11:30 till 21:00

(and every first Thursday of the month, stick that in your diary!)

What is the Affordable Arts Exhibition?

“The underlying philosophy behind the conception of Affordable Art Exhibition is to give patrons of art a wider platform to engage in buying high quality art works at reasonable prices. In addition to this it also gives upcoming artists an opportunity to showcase their talent at a very affordable price.”

“The past Affordable Arts Exhibitions have seen international participation from many gifted artists, working cross platform. This year our endeavor is to make the exhibition even more successful through careful selection of art works and a pricing strategy that is fair and reasonable.”

Where is it?

Cultivate Evolved- The First Day in the Gallery

Cultivate Evolved

The First Day at the Gallery

Yesterday was my first day on duty at the Cultivate Evolved gallery. It was a rather quiet day and pretty chilly but it was good to be in the space. Cultivate Evolved is a completely artist run space. There are eight permanent artists in residence there at the moment, myself included, and we have two guest spots available for artists that we feel are strong in their practice and unique in their vision and art.

I took a panorama of the space yesterday whilst I was watching the Cultivate Evolved gallery space (it’s not the greatest picture, unfortunately, not that impressed with my so called top of the range phone!)

Cultivate Gallery, Cultivate evolved, Artist run gallery, artist run space, artist space, artists gallery, Jessica Ballantyne, Julia Maddison, Sean Worrall, Emma Harvey, Chris Paul Godber, Genevieve HB, Gareth Morgan, Katrine Storebo

Artists from left to right: Genevieve H B, guest artist Julie Caves, Emma Harvey, Sean Worrall (in the corner), Julia Maddison, Jessica Ballantyne (me), Gareth Morgan, Katrine Storebo, Chris Paul Godber and right on the right a mix !

The Cultivate Evolved gallery is not merely a gallery for showing work, it is a space for each artist in residence who is watching the space at any given time to carry out their own work and engage with the public on a deeper level than just ‘gallery host’. How we do that is up to us but I think there’s going to be some exciting stuff happening this year!

You really have to see the art in person to truly appreciate it! Since I was there the whole day, it really gave me time to look at all the work closely and really start to connect with it! I decided it’s my aim to own a piece of art from each of our Cultivate members. I already have something small from Sean Worrall and Julia Maddison (see below). When the money starts to flow more easily to me I will be able to splurge on some bigger pieces 😉

This is what I worked on in my time in the Cultivate Evolved space. It is a sketch for my next Monk painting in the series of “Restless Monks”. You can see two of the completed circular paintings at the Cultivate Evolved space at the moment but they wont be there for long as we are regularly changing things up! For info on how to get there and about what we do, or if you are interested in becoming involved visit the blog here for more details.

Cultivate Evolved – first Official Opening Tonight!

Cultivate Evolved – first Official Opening Tonight

I can’t believe 2013 is behind now and a fresh year lies ahead! I am bounding into 2014 with huge ambitions which I’m sure will come to light with some hard work, determination and loads of courage and trust, so here goes!! One of the huge ambitions I’ve had for a while is collaborating and networking with more artists and creatives.

Tonight is the official opening a completely artist run space, Cultivate Evolved.

Cultivate Evolved is now a working, exhibiting artist run space and I’m very proud to one of those artists. I think that working together in a team is now the way to go not only for a wider reach but also to support and get support from fellow artists, I mean no one understands an artist’s woes like another artist right? ha ha:) ok so here are the details for tonight:

Gallery: Cultivate Evolved

Times: Thursday 2 Jan 6-9m. Then after the opening, times are Thursday to Sunday 11:30-18:00

Address: corner of Vyner Street and Mowlem St, London, E2 9HE (closest station is Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath). There will be some wine and such which, personally after new years eve, I’m not so interested in!

Here are the pieces I have on display, seeing them in real life (I have been told) is a completely different experience;)
